A Bad Hair Life?

Earlier this week I was joined by my friend Emma for a spot of lunch and as we sat in the sunshine, chatting and catching up something began to annoy me. I could feel the annoyance growing as I sat there until eventually I couldn't fight it and had to head to the powder room. As I peered into the mirror I could already pre-empt what was going to be looking back at me, yep, another bad hair day. Now 1 bad hair day is no big deal, we all have the occasional one but this was my 5th in a row and I was starting to despair. How I can leave the house with hair behaving and yet arrive at my destination looking like I have crawled through a bush backwards is a mystery. I can't understand it... I lovingly wash and condition my hair with good quality products, protect it from the sun, sparingly use my GHDs and yet it persists to sit in the most unflattering way. Now I'm not blessed with the most naturally fab hair, it does take a lots of work to look full (yep ladies I have super fine, curly hair) but surely after all this TLC it could just behave! As I slumped back in my seat feeling as deflated as my hair and trying to control the rising bout of envy at Emma as she has a thick mane of lustrous blonde waves,I admitted my frustration with my mis behaving locks was beginning to get to me. With Emma giggling at my BHD (bad hair day) we got onto the subject of the worst hair cuts we had ever had. Mine was at the tender age of 17, in the 1990's, walking into the hairdressers and asking for Natalie Imbruglia's elfin esk chop, to come out looking more like Pat Butcher, SOB! It took months of hair spray and grips to grow out, never again have I gone shorter than a bob. As Emma mopped up her tears of laughter at my hair faux pas, she admitted that she had given into the temptation of a perm. Subsequently she spent the next 6 month looking like a poodle whilst growing it out. Never a good look! This got us thinking about the worst hair styles we had seen...

Stuck in a time warp....
We have all seen those women who loved a hair style that much that they have kept it. Forever. Regardless of aging, weightloss/gain or live changes they wear this style with pride, feeling as young and as pretty as they day it styled that way for the first time. Now this is no bad thing, think of Anna Wintour and the classic bob. Gorgeous, timeless and sophisticated. But not for some, the ones we are talking about are the mullets, bad perms and the worst of the worst when the hair is tied back with one strand allowed to fall on the face, circa early 90's. Its dated, it ages you and it looks down right daft. A sleek ponytail can take years off you, create the illusions of cheek bones and add elegance to an outfit (esp if teamed with some gorgeous statement earrings). So any guilty parties out there pin that silly strand back and smarten up.

Colour Collision....
Whilst some women have style issues for others it colour. Whether its a harsh bleach blonde or skunk like stripey colours none of it looks good. Sadly the inspiration for the dirty blonde generation seems to be wannabe Z list celebrities who seem to think dark roots and trailer trash peroxide is a good look. Who goes into the hairdressers and actually asks for that? Or worst still which hairdressers agree to create that look?! Blondes can looking stunning, vibrant and glamorous, come on ladies just get it right. But above the bad bleach we decided the worst offenders were those who have the skunk stripes of colour. Be it blonde, red or brunette these wide stripes or chunks of colour just look cheap and tacky. High/low lights can make a big impact when done stylishly and there are some great home kits out there so no excuses!

Less is more.....
Is that a birds nest? A massive collection of knots? A new hair style inspired by Lady Gaga? Nope, guaranteed your looking at some bad extensions. The sad part is hair extensions cost a lot of money, many a girl has sacrificed and saved for these only to find that they need to be chopped out just weeks after they have been put in. There is also the ethical issue if your using real human hair, fashion should always be fair....

After leaving Emma I made a quick call to my hairdresser Saffron (stunning hair, think Jennifer Aniston) and booked myself in for later this week, some how under the illusion a cut and colour will be the end to all my BHD's.......
